Why Reality Media Works:
Research suggests that viewers desire to blend fact with fantasy in order to construct a complex experience*, an experience known as “hyperauthenticity”.* Viewers are stimulated when watching reality shows due to the fact that the actors are seen as peers and their actions are compared to the viewer’s own (Adams, 2005 pg 1).
The main reason why Americans tune into reality media is due to a desire for status (Belkin, 2004). Viewers are able to vicariously live through the lives or ordinary people and fulfill a fantasy of being famous. Ordinary people can become so important that millions of people will watch them. Not only does the cast become instantly famous through this phenomenon, the viewers realize they too, as ordinary people have a shot at instant celebrity too.
Other reasons why Americans what reality media (Nabi, Beily, morgan & Stitt, 2003):
• Entertainment
• Voyeuristic peak into the lives of other people
• Escape
• To gain useful information
• Social utility
Research (Brady, 2006) shows that among college students (ages 18-23) the different styles of reality media rank as follows:
• Documentary Based: 33%
• Makeover/Lifestyle: 18%
• Competition: 16%
• Talent: 14%
• Romance: 4%
In addition this research finds that men are more likely to choose competition based reality media, whereas women are more likely to choose drama based reality media. And among both men and women, a major factor in choosing reality media comes down to which shows help people in need and make the world a better place.
Strivin’ To Be Green combines the top 3 styles of reality media, there is some competition, some drama and lots of making the world a better place.
